A Display of Pride - New Guidon Presented

There will be more than dinky little streamers on the guidon pole from now on. Thanks to Frank, Gary and a few others, we now have a true guidon.



Guidons were developed by early armies as a means of identifying the location of commanders in the field, serving as rallying points in the chaotic atmosphere of the battlefield. No longer having a function in modern warfare, guidons are mostly ceremonial, serving as focal points for morale and representing achievement, responsibility, and esprit de corp.

The Biblical Guidon - Exodus 17: 8-16

Now Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim. And Moses said to Joshua, "Choose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand." So Joshua did as Moses said to him, and fought with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. And so it was, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses' hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

Then the Lord said to Moses, "Write this for a memorial in the book and recount it in the hearing of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven." And Moses built an altar and called its name, "The-Lord-Is-My-Banner"; for he said, "Because the Lord has sworn: the Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation."

The Color Bearer

To carry the guidon, or the "colors" as they are sometimes called, is a great honor. In time of war, the honor was bestowed upon the more courageous as they were often singled out for attack. To quote, "Emblematic of all of the history and glory of the company was the flag borne by the color bearer, a visible testimony of the company’s legacy and pride. There are higher ranks, but no greater honor and privilege than to be chosen as the color bearer."

Bearing the Guidon

There are five basic positions for the guidon. They are Order Guidon, Parade Rest, Carry Guidon, Present Guidon, and double-time carry.

When in the Order Guidon position, the bottom ferrule of the staff is on the ground at the tip of the right foot, with the upper portion of the staff resting in the bearer's arm pit. The bearer is at attention with his or her arms at the side. The staff is held in the vee formed between the thumb and fingers of the right-hand. The flat edge of the spear should face forward.

When at Parade Rest, the bearer tilts the staff forward at a 30 degree angle with the right arm and positions the left hand and forearm in the small of the back. The bearer also moves the left foot 12 inches to the left.

While marching with the guidon, it is carried in the Carry Guidon position. It is very similar to Order Guidon with the exception of being carried approximately 6 inches above the ground.

When presenting arms, the guidon is lowered to the Present Guidon position. In this position, the staff is tucked under the right arm and rotated forward until it is parallel to the ground. The staff is rotated so that the sharp edge of the spear is towards the ground.

The double-time carry allows the bearer more positive control of the staff. The right hand is positioned at the normal carry position and the left hand grips the staff just above the joint. The right forearm should be parallel to the ground and the staff should be tilted to the left across the bearer's body.

Week 4 - What to Expect

We will be entering a new phase in the cycle in week 4. Emphasis will begin shifting from the individual to the team. As we proceed through the next few weeks, try to think and work as a team. Frank and the TAC officers will continue to challenge us physically, don't be mistaken. However, our effort, or lack thereof, will affect others. For example, one person slacking off may mean more laps, more pushups, or more situps for everyone. Do your best! Don't let your classmates down!

To act like a team, we need to dress like a team. Wear the appropriate shirt on the appropriate day:

Mondays: Blue/Azule ("Blue Monday")
Wednesdays: Red/Rojo ("Blood of Christ")
Fridays: Yellow/Ammarillo ("Fridays are Golden")

A New Cadence

Michelle has written the following cadence. I think it's GREAT!
